Before beginning, I would like to thank the Officers, Primers & Boys of 66th for giving me the wonderful opportunity to serve and contribute back to 66th through this Drill Camp. Without your total faith and support, this article, much less the success of the camp would not have been made possible. Boys, thank you for coming, for by coming you are already a winner. And to top it off, I am proud of you Boys for going through the two days like a man! Primers Qihong, Jiangang & Dian Sheng, without you quality leaders running the show, I would not have known what to do. Thank you Officers, Primers & Boys alike!

This year saw a total of 16 Boys attending the Drill Camp for Drill Stage 1. It was wonderful weather when I arrived in Woodlands Secondary School, and breakfast was served (courtesy of 66th & Primer Yung Wan). The first official programme started at around 9.30am. I got to admit that facing the Sec 1 Boys for the very first time got me some butterflies in my stomach, and I truly got to know the task at hand after the first few basic drill lessons which came after some theoretical lessons. Like all first time Boys doing drill, there was no lack of tired legs. They knew how to do it after being shown what to do, just that they needed more practice together as a team to finetune & coordinate better. Basically, lessons being covered on the first day before lunch is Stand At Ease, Attention, Dressing from the right & Heads front. After lunch saw lessons on Stationary Left, Right & About turn, Mark time/Marching on the spot and Marching. You really have to give credit to the Boys for taking in so much on the first day, and the Primers as well for training the Boys in breakup groups!

The night of the first day saw memories of posture training came to me, but I already knew that it could have come earlier. Nonetheless, next time when there is the opportunity to finetune further that is what will be on the menu!

The second day saw myself arriving in Woodlands Secondary School at around 7.20am. Breakfast was served (you really have to give credit to 66th’s officers & Primers for their thoughtfulness and attention to detail!), and after Singspiration with song of Who Am I and devotion, the drill practical lessons & tests truly got underway at around 10.45am! The second day saw the Boys first starting with Marking Time for warming up. Compared to the first day, the Boys did way better at marking time and getting their timing together. They were also able to actually march & turn, and execute the drill movements better. This the Boys did until around 12pm when the Boys rested and started revising for their drill theory & practical tests after lunch at 1pm. The test was invigilated by Yung Wan (Thank you!) and marked by Qihong, Jian Gang & Yung Wan while I went to teach the Boys how to march out and collect their award (thank you people for marking the 16 papers!). When training for marching out to collecting the award was done, a “preview” of the drill down competition was given to the Boys. This was what they did until they rested and started their area cleaning of their respective places.

The Drill Down Competition started around 415pm, where the Boys underwent a few rounds of warmup before proceeding with the actual with the LDC 1 course participants, 66th officers, Primers & teachers-in-charge watching. Kian Peng eventually decided the champion with a Stationary Left Turn, to which the winner was presented with a food hamper and the runner up was presented with a tin of Milo! Wow! Yummy!

The graduation ceremony truly got underway with the participants of the LDC 1 and Drill Stage 1 forming up indoor in the area of the general office. All 16 Drill Stage 1 participants passed Drill Stage 1 with PTE Kau Jun Yang being the Best Trainee of Drill Camp 2009!

Time indeed flies by fast, and truly although I really do not know how the Boys think, but I do really feel the attachment that comes with being a trainer with a group of Boys. Much as I do not bear to leave, but all banquets and good things do come to an end. This Drill Camp for Drill Stage 1 would truly not have been successful without the attendance of the Boys, Primers and Officers running the show at different levels. The Boys actually did not need to be here, but they turned up because they are so much more willing to learn and are different from others. Throughout this camp, this batch of Boys have indeed shown that they do have the potential to do well in drill, and should this potential be harnessed appropriately alongside finetuning, they might even make it to the top if there are any drill competitions in the future! Cheers!

Before I begin this post, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the brains & hands of this inaugural gathering. So who are the masterminds & accomplices behind it? Notably, the masterminds are Xuan Ming, Dian Sheng, ably assisted by their accomplices Jun Xiong & Jun Wen! As well, not to forget the very warm show of support of the participants that made this event a success. If I left out any names in the process, please do forgive me for my STM eh (because I am getting younger mar..so I tend to forget older things that happened..LOL!)

Probably next time the gathering will have to be in a restaurant perhaps like Swensen’s to accomodate this many friends going out together. But still nonetheless there was still enough in each person’s humour and laughter to ensure that the place became filled more with our laughter and chatter than the sound of either cooking or other diners having a casual chat over dinner.

The photos alone, coupled with the entry here is not enough to describe the fun level of the gathering. It is like someone telling you what it feels like to be at the Niagara Falls in the US, with all the sounds that you can get to hear at the great waterfall, and even if you get the best sound surround enough you may be able to achieve the same effects of hearing but you may never be able to see and feel it firsthand. After dinner the group took a group photo just outside The Central, and proceeded from then on to Game Haven @ Safra. It was truly a gaming experience to remember in the function room, as the participants fully indulged themselves in the LAN games & Nintendo Wii game console.

Kelvin took the opportunity to raise the awareness level among the event participants that the BB66th Alumni falls under the huge umbrella of the Stedfast Association, which is the alumni association of the Boys’ Brigade. Kian Peng also took this opportunity to add in the different ways in which ex-Boys and Alumni members can help to contribute back to 66th. Thinking back it is definitely a far cry from the early days of the graduating Boys where the common thinking among all was only to go back to help and serve the company. Nothing bad about it though, as the ex-Boys who went back to help in those early gained their respective experiences and probably got to know more people in the process. It is just that nowadays there is one more platform and a more diverse way to serve 66th!

Afterwhich from there a self-intro from everyone, and in the midst of all, a surprise was sprang! The youngest batch among the gathering is not from Batch 11, but from Batch 12! So it all goes to see how deciding to join the youth organization of choice can change a person’s life i.e. knowing good friends. It actually was a surprise to me, but it does not matter! At the end of the day it is all about fellowship and having fun with the friends that you made!

The party truly started after the self intro where the guys helped themselves to generous doses of LAN gaming with Call Of Duty. Split into two teams of five on opposing sides of 5 pax per team, it provided truly a friendly competition not lacking in the intensity of urban warfare! Amongst it all there were also friends enjoying themselves on the Nintendo Wii with the fun game of…(errr…I forgot the title already..LoL!)

So to conclude, the party ended at around 11plus pm where everyone headed back along the NE line followed by the NS line. Truly it was a experience difficult to forget if you are there to see how everyone talked excitedly about their gaming experiences, and how much each one enjoyed one another’s company on the MRT. Although I went home with my voice hoarse thanks to all the laughing which I had, but in the end somehow it leaves me with a pleasant gaming experience being able to see my friends enjoying themselves at the gathering, no matter whether it is the dinner or the gaming itself!

Three years on after graduating (for some), this group of Boys & ex-Boys still feel the strong bond that exists beyond their academic time in Woodlands Secondary School. I do believe that it is the same for everyone, and I do strongly feel that it is because of these and the many wonderful memories & times in the blue uniform in the youth organization of choice that makes this kind of gatherings more eventful! So come and join us in the Alumni & Exco for more healthy doses of such events!
